Hatillo was founded on June 30, 1823 by Agustín Ruiz Miranda. Hatillo is known as "El Pueblo sin Sopa" (the town without soup). Since its foundation, Hatillo is mostly dedicated to livestock. Currently, it is the largest producer of milk per square mile in the world and produces a third of the milk consumed in Puerto Rico. In turn, the municipality has factories sponsored by Economic Development and the Plaza del Norte shopping center, the fifth most important in the country. Its beaches are conducive to fishing, an activity that has been sustained in recent years. Hatillo is also recognize as the Cow City, they said their lives more cows than people, that’s why they also called it Dairy Industry Capital.
