DESCUBRIR

Salt Deposits of Cabo Rojo

Whether you like to relax on the beach, shop, hike in the rain forest, or try great Puerto Rican food you can find it all in Luquillo. Ocean breezes, warm rains, and the bright sunshine make for an ideal climate in Luquillo. Luquillo sits on 12 miles of Atlantic coast and it has five main beaches. They are unique in that they form a long stretch of sand flanked by Palm trees that go on for miles along the sunny Atlantic shore. One can literally walk with feet in the ocean for hours without obstruction. Another unique thing about the Luquillo beaches is that each is different – you can find whatever you like here, large waves for surfing, medium ones for boogie boarding, or gentle ones for swimming or snorkeling. The Monserrate beach has the high distinction of a Blue Flag Beach, one of only eight in all of Puerto Rico. Luquillo’s peaceful atmosphere, along with the availability of many rental condos, makes it a great and relaxing vacation spot for couples and families.

Learn About Luquillo History

Luquillo was founded in 1797 by Cristóbal Guzmán. The town was named after the Indian cacique Loquillo, who died a few years after the last Indian rebellion in 1513. Luquillo is known as "La Capital del Sol" (sun capital) and "La Riviera de Puerto Rico" (Puerto Rico's Riviera). It is nestled between the incredible greens of the El Yunque National Forest to the west and the amazing blues, silvers, and greens of the Atlantic Ocean waters to the east. Only 7 miles to the southeast, you will find Fajardo with its ferries to other, off-shore islands of Puerto Rico (like Vieques) and the famous Bio-luminescent bays. Luquillo is a popular vacation spot for local tourists and San Juan residents but most non-residents usually just pass right through it without stopping when visiting Puerto Rico. This is unfortunate because Luquillo has a lot to offer. If you follow the coastal highway from San Juan, you will find this beautiful town only 35 minutes from the San Juan International Airport.
