Manatí historically is very famous for their plantation of pineapples. They are so famous that this pineapples are covering almost a 70% of the island pineapple market. Also aside from the cultivation, Manatí is famous for surfing especially in the Balneario Los Tubos. An interesting fact about Los Tubos is that the name came from the larger waves curl formed.

Manatí was founded in 1738 by Don Pedro Menéndez Valdez. It is named after a sea mammal, the manatee (the sea cow). Manatí is known as "La Ciudad Metropolitana" (metropolitan city) and "La Atenas de Puerto Rico" (Puerto Rico's Athens). During those early years, the Mayor of the town was Jose Aulet. Juan Ponce de León picked the Manatí leg of the Manuatabón River as the first area to pan for gold. The Aulet family owned lands rich in pineapples, sugar cane, and green bananas.
